Lambing Clinic in Shelburne Farms 2019

  • The Vermont Sheep and Goat Association and Shelburne Farms are sponsoring a lambing clinic at Shelburne Farms on Saturday, March 30. 2019. The American Sheep Industry Association also supports this event. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Chet Parsons is a retired UVM Extension livestock specialist and he has 30 years of experience teaching and demonstrating how to care for sheep. He has his own flock of 45 sheep and will be lambing in March also. Chet taught the Master Shepherd series of classes sponsored by VSGA a few years ago. I will be lambing a flock of 100 Montadale ewes. I have 25 years of experience raising sheep. I started with one lamb named Mary. She was lucky that she knew what to do when she had her first lamb; because I certainly did not. I am more than willing to share stories about the lessons I have learned over the years. Master Shepherd, Chet Parsons, will start the morning off with a class at the Farm House classroom which will go over the basics: ewe nutrition, early signs of labor, when to intervene in a difficult labor, dystocia, handy equipment to have on hand, clip, dip, and strip. We will have a pot luck lunch in the classroom and then move to the barns where Sam Dixon and Renee LaCoss will be in the middle of lambing 75 ewes. Various procedures will be demonstrated (dystocia, tail docking, castrating, tube feeding, hoof trimming, grafting, inverted eyelid). The weather at the end of March in Vermont can be unpredictable. Please dress warmly. Here is a link to the Shelburne Farms web site. It is a wonderful venue and has many ongoing activities. Be sure to check them out. The site contains a map and directions. There is a $10 charge for VSGA members and $20 for non-members.
