On-Farm Slaughter Workshop with Mary Lake

Rutland Area Shepherds and the VSGA are pleased to announce an on-farm slaughter workshop with Mary Lake. The workshop will be held on March 17th at 1pm at Dog and Crook Farm, 3200 US Route 7, Pittsford, VT.

Mary will show how she does on-farm slaughter and will be slaughtering 2 lambs. She will go over set-up, sheep handling, stunning and killing, skinning, eviscerating, and transporting to a cutting facility or preparing the carcass for cutting at home. Mary uses a captive bolt gun for safety and accuracy.

She has been doing on-farm slaughter for 4 years and has been slaughtering and cutting meat for 9 years. She learned most of her skills at a USDA inspected facility and has spent many hours talking about and practicing humane handling of livestock. This workshop will offer a space and time to ask questions, share concerns and discuss topics relating to meat production. Her hope is that sheep and goat producers can gain a better understanding of meat processing, come up with new ideas, and feel greater pride and confidence in their meat operation.
